How we serve

How we serve

As Sisters of Notre Dame, we work in multiple fields. We remain involved in education, pastoral services, in health care, Social Action, working with persons with various disabilities, communications, andin caring for girls in special need. We are retreat directors, and animators of “Integral Ecology”. We respond to the needs of the time.

1. EDUCATION MINISTRY
“From the beginning of our congregation, Christian education in its various forms has been our principal activity.”
Constitutional Directory 66.1
As Sisters of Notre Dame, we are engaged in education at all levels, from pre-school to teacher training, serving as principals, headmistresses, directors, teachers and councilors. As a community we continue to develop and strengthen our educational principles and engage in teacher training with concentration on education of the whole person: intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. At every level of our in educational ministry we are governed by the
Four Educational Principles which have served as cornerstones since our founding in 1850.

  • THE CENTRALITY OF A GOOD AND PROVIDENT GOD
  • THE HUMAN DIGNITY OF EACH PERSON AS AN IMAGE OF GOD
  • THE NOTRE DAME EDUCATOR AS A GOSPEL WITNESS
  • AN INTEGRATED EDUCATION FOR TRANSFORMATION

2. HEALTH CARE MINISTRY

“The sisters in health care ministry . . . care for the sick and elderly
with compassion, professional responsibility, and reverence
for the human dignity of those they serve.”   (Constitutional Directory 66.3)

A number of Sisters have been trained as Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and, therapists. We open health Centres in small towns and villages where medical care is needed for the poorer sections of the society.

3. SOCIAL ACTION MINISTRY
The Sisters of Notre Dame are committed to the process of transformative change so that “All may have life, and have it to the full.” We have a co-coordinator for our Social Action Centers and a JPIC Coordinator to animate our work for justice, peace, and the integrity of creation, in all of our ministries.
“We develop awareness of and sensitivity to issues of justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.
Sisters are encouraged to be active regarding these concerns both personally and communally.”
(Directory 30.1, Constitutions)

4.  PASTORAL MINISTRY:
Pastoral ministry is the care and leadership of people within the church. It is a vocation that requires compassion, wisdom, and a deep understanding of people. Pastoral ministry is a way to serve others and make a difference in their lives. All the Sisters, in whatever ministry we are involved in , we have a responsibility for the faith formation of the children under our care. IN addition to this we have a few Sisters who are full time in pastoral Ministry, involved in the activities of the parish and the diocese
